Cycling to End the Cycle of Poverty

Part 2

By Dorothy Johnson

John Pierce starts his cross county bike ride today.  Seattle, Washington is the starting point of this great adventure for our friend and neighbor. His adventure will end in Jersey City, New Jersey on Saturday August 30, 2008.

John will visit many cities along the way including:  Boise, Idaho, Salt Lake City, Utah, Denver Colorado, Madison, Wisconsin and Grand Rapids, Michigan.  John will be riding a total of 3,881 miles on this trip.

The bike ride is called “Sea to Sea” and the goal of the bike ride is to raise awareness about the root causes of poverty and to motivate people to help the poor. They are riding to end the cycle of poverty not only in the United States but also across the Globe.

With 36 million Americans living below the national poverty line, each rider has a goal of raising $10,000 dollars. This money will go back to poor communities through endeavors such as creating jobs, raising money for existing programs that help the poor and helping small businesses invest to increase their revenue.

As promised, we will be tracking John’s progress on this website for everyone to see.  A link will be provided on this page to take you to the page that is tracking the cyclists.  As explained on this page one of the participants will be wearing a GPS system that will update their location throughout the day as well as provide the approximate location of the rest of the group members as well.

John’s goal of raising $10,000 is a lofty one.  If you wish please visit this website: http://www.crcna.org/pages/sea_profile_piercej.cfm and make a donation in John’s name.

Let’s let John know that his friend’s and neighbors are behind him in this noble endeavor.

If you have any questions or ideas to help John on his way to his monetary goal please contact his daughter, Leah Pierce, at piercele@gmail.com.
